Travel buddies

27 Jan 2011 by Skyring

Hello, Discoverylover!

It’s me, Skyring!

I live for travel. I have a lust for distant places and experiences and people. To see the scenes of my favourite books and movies. To look down on exotic lands from ten kilometres up. To be on holiday, master (more or less) of my own time.

I spent years travelling around the world on my own. It’s fun. But every now and then, when I’d be looking out over the Golden Horn, or gazing into the slick of oil bubbling up from the Arizona, or browsing through the Tate Modern, I’d wish that I had someone to share the experience with.

And nowadays, I try to make my big trips with friends. In 2009 I went around the world with my daughter, and we had such a wonderful time in those fourteen days, making the crossing at Shibuya, walking the Royal Mile, cruising down the Seine, watching the Mets get crushed, and having a BBQ dinner with you in Washington.

Spending a week in the midwest with you was fun. So much fun!

And driving to Switzerland last year with five of us crammed into a Volkswagen, it was a pleasure to get out and explore quaint German cities or ask for a Luxemburger or go Double Dutch in Amsterdam.

My April is going to be one long roadtrip. I’ll take my two children, a fellow BookCrosser, and a friend of my daughter’s, and drive drive drive from San Francisco to DC, via the Grand Canyon, New Orleans and Cape Canaveral (and a zillion other places), where I’ll meet you for the BookCrossing convention.

Spending time with friends and leaving books on every monument in Washington.

And then we’ll head off West, taking that “highway that’s the best”. Spending three weeks with you, snarfing and BookCrossing our way across America, taking silly photographs, listening to Sister Hazel, and just having a blast sharing the experience.

Kind of like sharing a blog with a friend, I suppose. The whole is more than the sum of the parts, as they say.

Yours aye,
Skyring

Hey Skyring,

Once again I’ve taken far too long to reply, but it seems to be the theme of my year so far (heck I’d even go to say theme of my life!). Sometimes I’m just really in the mood to write! Today I’ve written 3 other blog entries (all right, it was really only 2 and a character list for my latest), and I should really update the other one. I’m so out of practice though! Maybe I should just write an entry saying it’s not currently being updated, and just have a go and keeping the rest up to date! After all, my life is about to become more exciting, time consuming and adventure packed than ever!

I went and booked flights for my big trip this year today. Spending 4 weeks in the USA is going to be so much fun. Especially since 3 of those weeks are going to be with you :D There are so many things I’m looking forward to. Like seeing the Grand Canyon. I had totally forgotten about that until Sister Hazels song ‘Grand Canyon’ came on, and I burst into a mad grin. Kind of the theme of the day, and I suspect the next few months!

New York with MissMarkey and the gang. I really didn’t give it enough of a chance last time I was there, but I’m already exciting about visiting again, especially with friends :D We’re going to have an absolute blast! I think the thing I’m most excited about (apart from seeing MM again!) is going to see War Horse, which is based on the book (of the same title) by Michael Morpurgo who is one of my favourite authors of all time. I know you’ve read one book by him (much to my disbelief!), and he is truly a fantastic story teller. I’ll have to lend you some more of my collection, I think you’d really enjoy ‘Private Peaceful’!

After New York we’re catching the train down to DC, where I’ll see you again, for the first time in months! Looking forward to that immensely, along with everyone else.

And then we head off for our longest road trip yet. So looking forward to that! 3 weeks with you in a car in America. Singing along to Sister Hazel. Seeing our friends. The Grand Canyon. Stopping and taking ridiculous photographs on the side of the road. Leaving books in mad places. Snarfing like crazy.

No wonder I can’t wait!

Really BIG Smile,

DL
